Discover the Japanese Art of Mizuhiki

An Introduction:

If you love meaningful design, traditional craftsmanship, or unique gifts from Japan, you’ll want to know about Mizuhiki. This elegant and symbolic Japanese knotting art has been used for centuries, and today it’s inspiring everything from minimalist earrings to intricately detailed stickers.

At Dreaming of Tokyo, we’ve curated a beautiful range of Mizuhiki-inspired pieces, blending timeless culture with modern style. Whether you're looking for a unique accessory, a thoughtful gift, or simply want to learn more about this enduring tradition, here’s everything you need to know.

What Is Mizuhiki?

Mizuhiki (水引) is a traditional Japanese art form that uses tightly wound cords made from washi paper, often coated with silk, rice glue, or metallic foil to create decorative knots. These cords are used to embellish gifts, envelopes (noshi), and ceremonial objects, each knot symbolising a unique intention or wish.

The origins of Mizuhiki trace back to the Asuka period (6th–8th century). When a Japanese envoy returned from China, he brought diplomatic gifts tied with red and white cords - a powerful gesture of goodwill that inspired Japan’s own ceremonial gift-wrapping practices. These colours still carry meaning today: red and white for celebrations, black and white for condolences, and other combinations for seasonal or formal use.

By the 14th century (Muromachi period), Mizuhiki had evolved into a highly refined craft with distinct knot styles, many of which are still in use. These knots aren't just decorative; they represent values like longevity, unity, peace, and resilience. Mizuhiki became deeply tied to Japanese etiquette and aesthetics, with specific forms used for weddings, births, and religious offerings.

Today, Mizuhiki remains a visual expression of connection, respect, and good fortune, infused with meaning whether used traditionally or reimagined for modern design.

The Symbolism Behind Mizuhiki Knots

Each Mizuhiki knot carries its own message, often drawn from Japanese culture and nature. Some of the most well-known motifs include:

  • Ume Musubi (Plum Blossom Knot): Symbolises perseverance, renewal, and good luck - perfect for celebrations and new beginnings.

  • Awaji Musubi: A tightly bound knot that cannot be untied, representing strong bonds and lasting connection - frequently used in weddings.

  • Cho Musubi (Butterfly Knot): A symmetrical bow that can be untied and retied, symbolising joyful events and future happiness.

These designs are more than beautiful—they are a visual language of emotion and intention.
